Tribute – Roy Hurry

I am very sad to report that Roy Hurry, a long standing active member of CAMRA’s Richmond & Hounslow branch has passed away. Sadder still is the fact that he passed away in October but the branch did not find out until early March. Roy had been suffering from ongoing health issues that greatly affected his mobility and he had withdrawn from all activities while he cared for his wife, Zainab, who had been developing dementia over a number of years. She survives him. Roy, a Hounslow resident, had been a stalwart of the branch since about 1990 and was a core member (and one of the main instigators) of the team that in 1992 set up the first Feltham Beer Festival. This became the Twickenham Beer Festival in 1999. Roy’s impressive knowledge and contacts in the brewing industry meant that he produced the beer list for virtually every beer festival thereafter. He also had long periods as branch secretary and social secretary, always good natured and willing to help others. Additionally, Roy’s familiarity with CAMRA rules and procedures was always a useful to the committee! By profession, Roy was a travel agent, numbering the Irish national football team among his clients. A side benefit to the branch was his encyclopaedic knowledge of public transport in London. His travel card pub crawls were legendary; always a great selection of pubs and impeccable details of the buses and trains to catch. We have lost a true friend.
