MORE MEMORIES OF MUSWELL HILL
Further to the letter in the August/September edition, I believe that there has been a brewery in Muswell Hill in the last 500 years. Apart from the very short lived Firkin brewpub that Derek Smith reported, there was also the Fortis Green Brewery which operated from around 1854 to 1884. The premises were subsequently taken over by Ind Coope as offices and brewing had certainly stopped by 1902. A map and very short history can be found in Haringey Pubs by Chris and Hazel Whitehouse, published by Tempus. The same book tells us that there was a hop yard in existence in Muswell Hill by 1574 and small scale hop production continued till 1874.
