Tribute – Ron Atkins

Further to the obituary for Brian Sheridan, I’m sad to report that Ron Atkins, another of our founding editors, passed away around the same time.   He was 89.  Better known professionally as Ronald, Ron was more famous as the jazz critic of the Guardian newspaper, which he combined with a day job in the Civil Service.  His own instrument was the clarinet.  A man of many talents, he also wrote or edited a number of books on both jazz and beer, as well as designing record covers.

Our quizmaster, Andy Pirson, remembers Ron well and also how London Drinker was put together in the early days.  The pages were printed in Manchester and they were brought down to London by car by a volunteer.  They would be taken to whichever pub was being used and a ‘working party’ would collate, fold and staple the pages to create the magazines for distribution.
