CAMRA Book Review – Desi Pubs

Published in May, this book, by award-winning British Asian journalist and beer writer David Jesudason, tells the story of those pubs which were initially established in the 1960s in response to non-white customers being refused service and their development into a modern-day celebration of multiculturalism. It tells how ‘desis’ (people with Indian heritage) saved many failing pubs and turned them into a joyful festival of mixed grills, naans and curries, all washed down with plenty of beer. Mr Jesudason visited desi pubs all over the country and experienced a range of events, from rowdy cricket fans to vibrant bhangra nights and football supporters enjoying pre-match mixed grills and beers. This book is a celebration of modern Britain and some of the forgotten people who created our multicultural country. Again, this book can be ordered on-line at https://shop1.camra.org.uk/product/desi-pubs/ and should also be available at the GBBF.

A special beer, Desi Pale Ale, has been brewed by the Meantime Brewing Company to celebrate the book’s release. Brewed with a combination of Willamette and Saaz hops and with coriander and turmeric added, the beer has notes of ripe mango, turmeric, and pepper.
