Cheers to beer!

The now well established Beer Day Britain will this year be celebrated on Sunday 15 June.  As usual, the toast ‘Cheers to Beer’ will take place at 7pm that day.  The event, now in its tenth year, was founded by beer writer and broadcaster Jane Peyton.  It is not sponsored by the trade but is supported by organisations in the beer industry such as the Society of Independent Brewers and Associates (SIBA), the British Beer & Pub Association and, of course, CAMRA.  The date of 15 June was chosen because it commemorates the sealing of Magna Carta which, in clause 35, provides, “Let there be throughout our kingdom a single measure for wine and a single measure for ale and a single measure for corn, namely the London quarter.”  This year it also coincides with Father’s Day and so that might give people some ideas.

Acknowledging that many people cannot get out to a pub or taproom, one of Jane’s recent innovations is to ask breweries to adopt care homes in their area and donate beer to them so that the residents can join in.  As Jane says, “Beer has a supernatural ability to unite people and get the party started.  With beer being Britain’s national alcoholic drink, you could say that every day is beer day but 15 June is extra special and one to bring the nation together to say Cheers to Beer!”  For more information go here.
