CAMRA’s East London and City branch will be holding their annual Roberts Ramble on Saturday 12 October. The event is held in memory of Pete Roberts, an ELAC member whose loves were real ale and rambling, which he would often combine.
This year the ramble will be within the branch area, exploring the southernmost parts of Epping Forest. We will be meeting at 12pm in the Golden Fleece. The pub is a short walk from Manor Park Elizabeth Line Station. This Greene King operated pub normally has a couple of guest beers available. From here we will walk across Wanstead Flats, the southernmost part of Epping Forest and on to the Good Beer Guide listed Holly Tree. The pub is run by Remarkable Pubs who refurbished and extended it in 2019. It has a miniature railway in the beer garden! There is normally a good selection of real ales available.
We will then walk through Bush Wood to the Leytonstone Conservation Area and visit our branch Pub of the Year, the North Star. Our route then continues to Wanstead Park, an enclosed area of the Forest that was formerly the landscaped parkland of Wanstead House (demolished in 1825). The park was added to Epping Forest in 1880. The walk will end in Wanstead High Street and there are numerous pubs in the vicinity to visit. Wanstead tube station is at the southern end of Wanstead High Street and Snaresbrook tube station is at the northern end. Both are on the Central line. We estimate that the ramble is just over five miles long. The walk is mainly flat.
Alternatively, there is the Wanstead Beer Festival at Christchurch Hall, Wanstead Place. This is not a CAMRA event. If you intend to attend, please check their website for ticket information.
