Farewell to the Capitol

The Capitol (SE23 3TW) closed on Sunday 15 October under Wetherspoon’s programme of disposing of leased premises. It was originally a cinema, opened in 1929 and designed in the neo-classical style for London & Southern Cinemas. It was the work of noted cinema architect and garden designer John Stanley Beard and is Grade II listed.

Situated in the heart of Forest Hill, albeit on the South Circular Road, it opened as a pub in May 2001. It has been a stalwart in the area and certainly kick-started the idea of a‘ni ght out in Forest Hill’ for me, CAMRA South East London branch, local dads’ groups, major sporting events and Sunday evening family meals out. It had excellent wall displays, including a fine montage celebrating local boy Boris Karloff (William Henry Pratt). A few years ago, films were actually being shown, thus recognising its original purpose.

JDW must have spent a small fortune restoring it. No matter what you think of the company and its chairman, transforming a disused bingo hall/former cinema, despite all the complications of it being a listed building, into a vibrant community resource has been very beneficial for the area. It is very sad to see it close.

The last night was busy, with standing room only, patronised by all ages. South East London branch were well represented. Later in the evening, a large portable speaker came out and well-known songs were played, singing along was encouraged and there was even dancing! Whatever next in a ‘Spoons!

As of writing, at the end of October, we are still awaiting news as to what will become of it. So far, enquires have not been answered. We hope it will remain a venue for the public. The photo shows the celebrations (with thanks to Gavin A Fernandes).
