Sheps launch Cask Club 2023

Quite understandably there is a lot of pessimism in the beer world at the moment and one area that is causing even greater concern is the future of cask-conditioned beer. The closure of pubs that sell such beer and the impact of the various lockdowns are part of the cause for concern. The latter both changed the preferences of many drinkers and got them used to drinking beer at home rather than going to the pub, the home of cask beer. And let’s not talk about the current economic situation…

So, in all of this, it is good to see Kent brewer Shepherd Neame launch what they describe as an innovative real ale initiative, their Cask Club. This concept actually started in 2019 but stalled because of the pandemic. Therefore, in effect, it was its re-launch that took place at the beginning of February. This was held at the Jamaica Wine House in St Michael’s Alley, just off Gracechurch Street (EC3V 9DS). This Grade II-listed pub is a place to visit in its own right, being a pub of considerable historic and architectural interest.

Be sure to get down to a Sheps’ pub for a taste of cask. You will find full details of the scheduled beers, the history behind the naming of Maverick, tasting notes on the beer and the full list of the pubs participating here.

CASK CLUB PASSPORT
To support the Cask Club, in March, Sheps reactivated their passport scheme, last used in 2019. Passports are available from participating pubs (there are 23 in the London area) and participants need to collect a stamp for each Cask Club beer they try. Those who complete the passport (seven stamps) can claim a Cask Club t-shirt and will be entered into a prize draw for a ‘weekend getaway’. After three stamps, you can claim a free pint. In addition, Sheps are offering CAMRA members a 20% discount on Cask Club beers on presentation of a valid CAMRA membership card.
