There are a number of books about closed pubs in London, along with various websites. This one, despite the sad subject, is probably the most interesting and amusing that I have come across. Split into five sections, Central, East, North, South & South East and West & South West, it contains details of 202 pubs. Most are labelled ‘dead pub’ but others are encouragingly described as ‘back from the dead’ where there have been recent developments. For each pub there is a description of what the pub used to be like and, where appropriate, what stands in its place now. There are also over 500 excellent photos. Very usefully, the author makes suggestions as to where you can now get a drink nearby.
The author, Paul Telling, runs the Derelict London website, which is worth looking at in its own right, and he has gathered the information over twenty years as an organiser of guided walking tours on a number of subjects. Mr Telling has written several other books, including two detailing London’s lost music venues.
