The <a Black Horse in High Barnet has reopened. Originally a coaching inn, dating from the 1720s, the pub closed in September 2025 because of financial difficulties. Until 2021 it had been the home of the Barnet Brewery. Three former regulars, who all live nearby, have set up a company called Barnet Community Pubs and have taken a lease on the pub from Star Pubs & Bars. It took some effort to get it into a fit state to open but they were helped by locals who wanted their pub back. Some 4,000 of them had previously signed a petition to save the pub.

Sadly however, Brendan Moore, who had been the brewer at the Barnet Brewery, passed away around the same time. He had originally been involved with the Iceni Brewery in Norfolk and was chair of SIBA’s East Region for some years.

The Boot & Flogger in Borough, London has been added to CAMRA’s National Inventory of historic pub interiors with one star in recognition of its timber interior, unchanged since the early 1970s. This includes a manager’s office, a long panelled main room divided by three partial partitions, snugs, display cabinets and a custom-made bar counter and bar-back. A wine bar operated by Davy’s since 1965, it does not sell either beer or spirits.

China Hall in Rotherhithe in a while. The pub is owned by Hamna Wakaf Limited (HWL), a name not unknown on these pages. The upper storeys have long been converted into flats but the ground floor was to remain a pub. In 2022 however, HWL started work on converting the ground floor into two further flats. They did not have planning permission. Southwark Council became aware of this activity and ordered a halt. HWL then sought retrospective planning permission for the conversion, which Southwark’s Planning Committee refused. HWL appealed to the Planning Inspectorate in 2024 but this was also refused and the company was again ordered to reinstate the pub. The ground floor was vacated but nothing has since been done as regards the reinstatement. Southwark’s planning enforcement team are now looking to prosecute HWL for non-compliance. We may yet be some way from seeing the pub reopen but this is a vital step forward. In case you are wondering if it is worth the effort, it worked with the same owner in the case of the Old Justice nearby.

<figure class="aligncenter
