Martin Hayes met Peter Slezak when\nthey were both twelve and they have been friends ever since. Martin took over\nthe Pimlico Tram, a closed, rough Greene King pub and transformed it into the\nfree of tie Cask Pub and Kitchen. Peter joined him shortly after to build the\nCraft Beer Co, now a chain of nine pubs around London, all of which were pubs where other\noperators had given up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To\nrecognise their work in rescuing pubs for the community, the pair have been\ngiven the 2019 John Young Memorial Award, which is made annually in celebration\nof an individual or organisation that has done the most for real ale and\/or\npubs within the Greater London area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The quote from Martin gives a good example of why they run good pubs and the reason for their name, \u201c<em>I\u2019m passionate about pubs and hospitality. I\u2019ve always thought that you should care about what you do. Craft beer is a confused term but for me, craft simply means good beer, whether cans, cask, bottles or keg<\/em>.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"752\" height=\"415\" src=\"https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/image-22.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-651\" srcset=\"https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/image-22.png 752w, https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/image-22-300x166.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 752px) 100vw, 752px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The award shield was presented to Martin in the Pimlico pub by Torquil Sligo Young (right), nephew of John Young. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>GREATER\nLONDON PUB OF\nTHE YEAR <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A<\/strong>s mentioned in the last edition, the\nwinner of CAMRA\u2019s Greater London Pub of the Year was the Hope in Carshalton. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"864\" src=\"https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_0686-1024x864.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-652\" srcset=\"https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_0686-1024x864.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_0686-300x253.jpg 300w, https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_0686-768x648.jpg 768w, https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_0686-1536x1295.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_0686-2048x1727.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This\nwas their fifth win in eight years so you have to admire the way that they\nmaintain their standards. Their recent refurbishment simply made a good pub\nbetter. The award was presented on 31 October during their recent beer\nfestival. A good crowd enjoyed the special festival beers with several brewers\npresent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>GREATER\nLONDON CLUB OF\nTHE YEAR <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I<\/strong>n October Orpington Liberal Club were presented with a certificate to mark their winning the competition for CAMRA\u2019s Greater London Region Club of the Year.
