{"id":5905,"date":"2025-11-26T11:59:46","date_gmt":"2025-11-26T11:59:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/?p=5905"},"modified":"2025-11-26T12:00:59","modified_gmt":"2025-11-26T12:00:59","slug":"a-remarkable-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/index.php\/2025\/11\/26\/a-remarkable-story\/","title":{"rendered":"A Remarkable story"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As reported in our previous edition, CAMRA Greater London\u2019s John Young Memorial Award for 2025 was awarded to Robert Thomas, the founder of Remarkable Pubs Ltd.\u00a0 Over the last 40 years Robert has taken over pubs across London, many of them unloved, and has turned them into the heart of their communities.\u00a0 It all started when Robert and his wife, Jean, were cycling past the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/camra.org.uk\/pubs\/prince-george-hackney-156073\">Prince George<\/a><\/strong> in Dalston (E8 3AG).\u00a0 They admired its classical pillared porch and architectural charm but didn\u2019t much fancy a drink inside. \u00a0Upon discovering the pub was for sale and, despite never having worked in or run pubs before, they decided to take a chance on the old building and carefully rescue it.\u00a0 This was the start of many.\u00a0 The Remarkable Pub estate now consists of 17 pubs, mainly in east and north London.\u00a0 All have been sympathetically refurbished. \u00a0Remarkable Pubs are still a family business with Robert and Jean\u2019s son and daughter now involved.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"751\" height=\"485\" src=\"https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/image-27.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5906\" srcset=\"https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/image-27.png 751w, https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/image-27-300x194.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 751px) 100vw, 751px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Andy Kinch from CAMRA\u2019s East London branch said, \u201c<em>Robert\u2019s venture has resulted in a very remarkable and much-loved set of pubs. &nbsp;Their acquisitions are always carefully restored with some magnificent examples including the Boleyn Tavern in Upton Park, where a huge amount of love and care went into bringing this beautiful and majestic building back to its former impressive Victorian glory<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ellie Eames, CAMRA\u2019s Regional Director for Greater London, added, \u201c<em>At a time when so many pubs are altered with little regard to their heritage, Remarkable Pubs have bucked this trend and we are delighted to be awarding Robert the John Young Memorial Award. &nbsp;We think that John Young would approve<\/em>!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Robert said, \u201c<em>We are delighted to receive this much coveted award. &nbsp;My thanks go to all the people who have worked hard and contributed to our success. &nbsp;And thank you to all the customers who have supported us and given us inspiration and ideas for our pubs<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The award was presented at the Prince George on 28 October.&nbsp;
