Bower reopens"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As an organisation that loves pubs and does everything to ensure their survival, we have to be thankful to pub operators (and brewers) Shepherd Neame of Kent.\u00a0 Spending \u00a3950,000 on a pub refurbishment is no mean investment and, after a three-month project, it is great to see the <a href=\"https:\/\/camra.org.uk\/pubs\/white-horse-bower-london-128771\">pub <\/a>open again (the pub actually closed in January 2024).\u00a0 Sheps have put as much effort into restoring its heritage features as they have in improving the interior and upgrading its facilities. \u00a0While doing this there was considerable attention paid to sustainability, including LED lighting and a fully electric kitchen.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1014\" height=\"806\" src=\"https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/image-24.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5901\" srcset=\"https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/image-24.png 1014w, https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/image-24-300x238.png 300w, https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/image-24-768x610.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1014px) 100vw, 1014px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u00a0The pub was built in 1812 and acquired by Sheps twenty years ago.\u00a0 It is not far from Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament.\u00a0 I was fortunate to attend the formal reopening led by chief executive Jonathan Neame. \u00a0I am no expert on architectural features but my notes say tasks undertaken included a new Barley Window, a reclaimed fireplace, work on the stained glass and adding Lancaster Wallpaper. \u00a0The swing sign outside is wooden and hand painted.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1002\" height=\"669\" src=\"https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/image-25.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5902\" srcset=\"https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/image-25.png 1002w, https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/image-25-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/image-25-768x513.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1002px) 100vw, 1002px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Mr Neame set out the current difficulties for the hospitality industry and pubs in general, highlighting their key value to local communities, hence their need to survive. \u00a0To emphasise this, the company made a \u00a31,000 donation to the local Cardinal Hume Centre, which supports local people in such areas as childcare, housing and employment initiatives. \u00a0The MP for Faversham &amp;
