May 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\u2022 Those who visited or worked at the Great British Beer Festival in the last few years will be sad to hear that the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/camra.org.uk\/pubs\/beaconsfield-west-kensington-129123\">Beaconsfield<\/a><\/strong> next to Olympia has closed.\u00a0 The operators said that this was \u2018following an incredibly tough three year struggle\u2019.\u00a0 The redevelopment work at Olympia, which has included road closures, cannot have helped.\u00a0 The pub, which dates from 1900 and was originally built for Lacons Brewery, becoming in 1989 the Frigate &amp; Firkin, one of the David Bruce chain.\u00a0 At present, the pub\u2019s future is uncertain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d2s8km3brsjp0y.cloudfront.net\/eyJidWNrZXQiOiJ3aGF0cHViIiwia2V5IjoiV0xEXC9XTEQrMTY0MzItMTI3OTIwLTIwNDMtMTUzMi5qcGciLCJlZGl0cyI6eyJyZXNpemUiOnsid2lkdGgiOjIwMDAsImhlaWdodCI6MTQ5OSwiZml0IjoiY292ZXIifSwicm90YXRlIjpudWxsfX0=\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Change has come to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/camra.org.uk\/pubs\/dog-croydon-141515\">Dog &amp; Bull<\/a><\/strong>, the historic market pub in Croydon\u2019s Surrey Street (CR0 1RG).\u00a0 Now owned by Punch Pubs following Young\u2019s sale of their tenanted estate (the Ram Pub Company) in 2021, it is being operated by Laine Pubs, a Punch group company.\u00a0 There has been a refurbishment, said to have cost \u00a3125,000, most of which has been spent on the garden area, now known as \u2018the Wilderness\u2019.\u00a0 Laines have also changed the name to simply \u2018The Dog\u2019 (quite unnecessarily in the view of many) and they have altered the front signage.\u00a0 Questions were raised as to whether this infringed the pub\u2019s Grade II-listed status but apparently not.\u00a0 It seems that the pub will now focus on the younger end of the trade, which will be a shame if it means that it is no longer welcoming to all, as it traditionally has been.\u00a0 The garden is now equipped with a sound system and Laines have suggested that they might use this until 2am on Fridays and 3am on Saturdays.\u00a0 There is a lot of residential accommodation in the immediate area, so this has not been well received locally.\u00a0 It is understood that no formal application has so far been submitted.\u00a0 CAMRA\u2019s Croydon &amp; Sutton branch are monitoring the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/dog-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/dog-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/dog-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/dog-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/dog-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/dog.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a>\u2022<\/a> On the subject of Croydon pubs, two have recently changed hands.\u00a0 The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/camra.org.uk\/pubs\/two-brewers-croydon-141549\">Two Brewers<\/a> <\/strong>in Selhurst was sold by Shepherd Neame in January and there was concern that the site would be developed.\u00a0 It is now reported however that it has been taken over by the former operator of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/camra.org.uk\/pubs\/royal-standard-croydon-141586\">Royal Standard<\/a><\/strong> and will reopen shortly.\u00a0 The Royal Standard, sold by Fuller&#8217;s to Admiral Taverns in June 2024, has, in turn, been taken over by Esther Sutton, a much respected local publican who has run the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/camra.org.uk\/pubs\/oval-tavern-croydon-141561\">Oval Tavern<\/a><\/strong> since 2013.\u00a0 Ms Sutton will continue to run the Oval Tavern and both pubs will remain much as they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 News of another pub reopening.\u00a0 The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/camra.org.uk\/pubs\/flowerhouse-london-129246\">Flowerhouse<\/a><\/strong>, formerly the Wallace Head, in Marylebone closed in November 2024.\u00a0 It has now been acquired by the Public House Group who also operate the Pelican in Notting Hill and the Hero in Maida Vale and it will be similarly food-led.\u00a0 A substantial renovation is in progress, which includes converting the second floor into a restaurant and installing new toilets in the basement.\u00a0 It is reported that the name will be changed to the Hart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 The<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/camra.org.uk\/pubs\/gun-homerton-156194\">Gun<\/a><\/strong> in Homerton, said to be one of the most famous pubs in Hackney and certainly one of the most attractive, has closed, with operators Locals Club finding it impossible to keep trading in the current financial climate.\u00a0 It is also a serious loss as a music venue.\u00a0 It is expected to reopen under new management but it is not known when.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d2s8km3brsjp0y.cloudfront.net\/eyJidWNrZXQiOiJ3aGF0cHViIiwia2V5IjoiRUxDXC9FTEMrMTQ2MDUtOTk4OTAtMTU4Ni0yNDAwLmpwZyIsImVkaXRzIjp7InJlc2l6ZSI6eyJ3aWR0aCI6MTU4NiwiaGVpZ2h0IjoyNDAwLCJmaXQiOiJjb3ZlciJ9LCJyb3RhdGUiOm51bGx9fQ==\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Gun in 1989 (c) ELAC CAMRA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><a>\u2022 <\/a>Sad news from the <strong>Long Pond<\/strong> micropub in Eltham (SE9 1UT0).&nbsp; The owner, Mike Wren, passed away unexpectedly in early April.&nbsp; We send our condolences to his family and colleagues.&nbsp; Mike opened the pub in 2014 and it has proved to be a very successful venture, being CAMRA South East London branch\u2019s Pub of the Year in 2017 and runner up twice.&nbsp; The pub remains open but, if you are travelling any distance, it may be best to check on its Facebook site first.&nbsp; Mike was involved in a local campaign to install defibrillators, so anyone wishing to remember him might like to consider making a donation at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justgiving.com\/crowdfunding\/mike-wren-elthamparksouthdefib\"><em>https:\/\/www.justgiving.com\/crowdfunding\/mike-wren-elthamparksouthdefib<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 The Grade II-listed <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/camra.org.uk\/pubs\/mcglynns-london-125469\">McGlynns<\/a> <\/strong>in St Pancras, closed since the passing of publican Gerry Dolan in September 2023, has been sold.\u00a0 The price paid has been reported as \u00a33,150,000.\u00a0 The identity of the new owner has yet to be revealed but the agents who acted in the sale say that the site will \u2018<em>continue to be used as a public house and the new owner intends to keep the traditional style that patrons have enjoyed for many years, even down to the name, retaining the family legacy after 40 years of ownership\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 We await developments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d2s8km3brsjp0y.cloudfront.net\/eyJidWNrZXQiOiJ3aGF0cHViIiwia2V5IjoiTkxEXC9OTEQrNjI5MC0xMzI5NTEtMTAyNC02ODMuanBnIiwiZWRpdHMiOnsicmVzaXplIjp7IndpZHRoIjoxMDI0LCJoZWlnaHQiOjY4MywiZml0IjoiY292ZXIifSwicm90YXRlIjpudWxsfX0=\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Readers may recall that in 2020, despite a local campaign, the <strong>Marquis of Lansdowne<\/strong> in Haggerston (E2 8HD) was incorporated into the Museum of the Home (previously the Geffrye Museum) as a cafe called Mollys.&nbsp; It is reported that the caf\u00e9 is now closing.&nbsp; Whether or not the site will become available as a pub again is not yet known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 What was previously the Roxie Steak &amp; Tap (originally the Black Dog until 1975) in London Road, Twickenham will be reopening shortly as the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/camra.org.uk\/pubs\/rose-lion-twickenham-121935\">Rose &amp;
