Sometimes my curiosity will be so piqued that I’ll try to find out more. This book has answered many of my questions. Focusing on pubs that have closed in the last 25 years and organised geographically by borough, it is an excellent reference work for any Londoner. There are photos of nearly all of the pubs, some current, some in their heyday, with a few, succinct, paragraphs on each one. The research that the author, Sam Curren, has done is meticulous. It usually included a site visit, anecdotes gathered from locals who remember the pub and factual data uncovered during visits to the relevant archives. There is also a fair amount of input from certain CAMRA members that you may recognise.

On receiving my preview copy of this book, I went straight to the Lambeth and Southwark sections (where I grew up) and, lo and behold, there were some of the pubs I used to walk past as a child or, later in life, pass on my way to work. I loved the sense of nostalgia that this book evoked in me and, when I found myself looking at pubs in Hornsey (never been there in my life), I even felt a pang or two for the pubs I’d never visited!

Morose as the topic may seem to some, this book feels much more like a celebration, with a description of each pub’s past glory. It also includes notes on the current status of the building, which, in some cases, kindles hope for the future.

This is a gem of a book for Londoners, pub lovers, and coffee tables everywhere.
