Born in Doncaster, he attended Merton College Oxford and then moved to Cambridge to lecture on Anglo-Saxon literature. He was CAMRA\u2019s fifth National Chairman, from 1983 to 1986, serving on the National Executive from 1981 to 1989. He helped organise the Cambridge Beer Festival in its early days and was a pioneer of the beer festival concept as we know it today. He was still actively contributing to the Campaign until the end, his most recent project being the setting up of the CAMRA archive at the University of Warwick.
