Located at 17 Denman Street, just off Piccadilly Circus, this classic cosy pub, with soft lighting, wooden panelling, a red patterned pub carpet and elegant green leather seating, is a great addition to the London pub scene. The three friends behind this new venture are Oisín Rogers, Charlie Carroll and Ashley Palmer-Watts, all of whom have extensive backgrounds in the pub and restaurant trade in London.

Oisín has previously been landlord of the Windmill and manager of the Guinea Grill in Mayfair. The Devonshire was established as a pub in 1793 but was a Jamie’s Italian restaurant until that closed in 2019. The pub interior had to be rebuilt from scratch and the exterior, including the new handsome pub sign, was hand crafted and is painted in dark green with gold leaf. It is good to see the building being brought back to its original use as a pub.

There are six cask ale pumps and 22 keg beer taps in the downstairs bar. Four cask ales were on offer at the time of my visit in November: Fuller’s London Pride, Timothy Taylor’s Landlord, Sambrook’s Wandle and Weetwood Ales Cheshire Cat. London Pride is the regular ale on offer. I sampled the Cheshire Cat, a smooth, easy drinking pale ale, which tasted great. Keg beers included Gipsy Hill Hepcat and Verdant Light Bulb, with the main focus on Guinness. Pub snacks are available in the downstairs bar (walk-ins only) but there is a restaurant upstairs.
Joanne Scott

The Devonshire (W1D 7HW) opened in November 2023 after an extensive refurbishment.
