The award is presented to an individual or organisation that the London branches of CAMRA believe has made a substantial contribution to promoting real ale and/or pubs within the Greater London area. Nominations are made by the London branches and voted on by them. The award is not open to volunteers or groups within CAMRA.

The winner this year, nominated by CAMRA’s Croydon & Sutton branch, is the well known publican Rodger Molyneux. For over ten years, Rodger has been a significant force in the promotion of good quality beer and good pubs in south and south west London. As one of the management team at the Hope in Carshalton, Rodger helped oversee the formation of a company firstly to lease and subsequently to buy the freehold of the pub from Punch Taverns. The high standards which he has helped set have led to the Hope winning the branch Pub of the Year award every year since 2012 and winning the Greater London Pub of the Year award six times in the last 12 years, including the current year.

Since 2014, Rodger has also run the Trafalgar Free House in South Wimbledon. This has also been a Pub of the Year, this time for South West London branch. It closed temporarily in 2021 while the owners were reviewing their options but, happily, this has now been resolved and the ‘Traf’ reopened to general acclaim on 12 September 2023.

In 2019, Rodger was part of a small team that successfully bid to run the former Charles Cryer Theatre in Carshalton. Cryer Arts is now a popular arts centre and Rodger has ensured that the bar quickly reached Good Beer Guide standard. Rodger has also helped other local publicans to maintain high standards and has assisted CAMRA at several branch beer festivals with both equipment and expertise.

The presentation took place at the Trafalgar on Tuesday 14 November.
