The 3 Locks is a little bit more than just a pub; it has a state of the art brewery too.
To say the whole set up is something out of the ordinary is probably not doing justice to both the site and how it came into existence. Having previously run a brewery on the Greek island of Pathos, Marinos Alexandrou decided in 2019 that he wanted to set up a brewery where he lived in London. Inevitably the project was delayed by the pandemic but, after a bit of work, in 2021, he found a site by the Regent’s Canal, under the railway arches at Hawley Wharf, Camden.

Then the search began to find some brewers. Matt Dean was brewing in a brewpub in Athens called The Local Pub. This brewery was started after the owner got tired of the difficulties of bringing in beer; he struggled to get the beers he wanted. Through a friend, Matt heard Marinos was looking for brewer at his new brewery in London. Matt had some experience of brewing in the Capital, having brewed with Meantime before going to Greece, and so Matt made the decision to return to the UK.

In addition to Matt, there is Chris Greenhalgh. He started his brewing career as a home brewer and decided that he wanted a change from his day job (in marketing at the BBC), so he e-mailed brewers in London. This led to him volunteering at Brixton Brewery and then becoming an employee, running the packaging side. Chris had no plans to leave but his girlfriend, a musician, was playing at the Swan in Hyde Park and got chatting to Marinos. She told him, “my boyfriend is a brewer” and the rest is history.

Mr Cryne at the bar

The site is split between two railway arches, one of which fronts the canal. The brewery is sandwiched in between, at the back of the tasting room, as they call it, which has space for expansion. There is investment already earmarked for a canning line. Upstairs is a light and airy seating area, with windows overlooking the canal. Leaving the tasting room and turning right under an arch takes you past the brewery to their second arch, where there is another bar situated on the first floor. At the time of our visit it was showing the World Cup. There is also outside seating, which is likely to prove popular in summer. Look out for the red tourist train while you are there.

The train

The 3 Locks tasting room is open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Their location means that they attract a lot of tourists but, on Sundays in particular and after 5pm, the locals come along, grateful to have a bar on their doorstep.

These are still early days for 3 Locks. Currently, they have one beer of their own on sale, Pale Ale. This is a little different from most pale ales brewed in London; it uses one established British hop, East Kent Goldings, and a newer British hop, Ernest. The result is a well balanced, refreshing beer with orange, caramel, spicy hops and a hint of hazelnuts. The other taps currently serve beers from Brick and Werewolf but Matt and Chris plan to begin brewing more beers, including a Hefeweissen and a West Coast IPA, to complement the other beers.

This is a good time to visit 3 Locks, before the summer brings more tourists to the market. They are happy for you to bring in food from nearby shops. The brewery is not difficult to get to; it’s a short walk from either Camden Road Overground or Camden Town Underground. The full address is Unit S14, Water Lane, NW1 8NZ. And if you want to make it a dual tap room excursion, Werewolf is also nearby.
