It has been presented every year since 2007 (except in 2015 and 2021). Its aim is to publicly acknowledge an individual or organisation external to CAMRA that the London branches believe has made a substantial contribution to real ale and/or pubs within the Greater London area. We also hope that the award will help raise the profile of CAMRA and the activities of its branches within Greater London.

The recipient of the award for 2022, nominated by CAMRA’s Richmond & Hounslow branch, is Steve Brown, the owner and founder of Twickenham Fine Ales. Steve left the IT sector to found TFA in 2004 and TFA is now the longest surviving of the ‘new wave’ of London brewers. The project was financed by Steve and a group of enthusiastic local investors.

TFA started with a ten barrel plant but has gone from strength to strength, moving in 2012 to larger premises where there was room for a 40 hectolitre plant, more fermenting vessels and a taproom. From the start, perhaps influenced by their first head brewer, the American Tom Madeiros, TFA were pioneers in the use of New World hops.

TFA’s beers have won many awards, including a silver in CAMRA’s Champion Beer of Britain competition in 2007 for Crane Sundancer (now discontinued). Naked Ladies (4.4% ABV golden ale) is the current Champion Beer of London.

TFA’s beers are widely available in the free trade but can also be found in their tap room at the brewery in Mereway Road, Twickenham. Check the website for times. The tap room is particularly lively when there are international games on at Twickenham Stadium. There is also a shop on site. For more information, including booking for brewery trips, go here.

TFA also have a pub, acquired in 2019, the Rifleman, in nearby Fourth Cross Road. This sells guest beers as well as TFA’s own products.

Arrangements are being made for the presentation of the award and this will be covered in a future edition.

This award, presented by the Greater London branches of CAMRA, is a celebration of the memory of John Young and his impact on real ale and pubs within London.
