For the Widow\u2019s Son in Bow, East London, Good Friday brings about not only a\ncelebration of Easter but also a commemoration of sailors who never returned to\nport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"752\" height=\"649\" src=\"https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Widows-Son-story-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Widows-Son-story-2.jpg 752w, https:\/\/londondrinker.camra.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Widows-Son-story-2-300x259.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 752px) 100vw, 752px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Legend has it that the pub was built on the site of a\nwidow\u2019s house and one Easter (possibly during the Napoleonic Wars) she baked a\nhot cross bun in anticipation of the return of her only son. Sadly, her son\nnever returned but, each year until she passed away, she baked a new bun and\nput it in safekeeping for the day he did return. When the pub was built, the\nstore of buns was discovered and the tradition was born. Every Good Friday\nsailors from the Royal Navy come to place a freshly baked bun in a net above\nthe bar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2015, the bar closed and it was feared that this unique tradition would be lost.
