Tom goes home

Tom Madeiros, who has spent many years brewing in England, has retired home to Oregon in the United States. Tom came to the UK around 1998 and learned his trade at the Brewlab brewing school at the University of Sunderland. It was not long before he came south and began brewing at Grand Union in Hayes, Middlesex (2002 to 2008). There he developed several beers including Grand Union Bitter which was later to become Twickenham Grandstand Bitter. He moved to Twickenham Fine Ales in 2005.

Among the ales he created there as head brewer was the award-winning Naked Ladies, a hoppy 4.4% ABV golden ale, named after the Grade II-listed water nymph statues in York House Gardens in Twickenham. The beer was voted CAMRA’s Champion Beer of London in 2022. After eight years at Twickenham, Tom moved to south Devon to join a brewery there.

Tom is pictured enjoying his last ever pint of Naked Ladies at the recent Twickenham Beer Festival. He took the plane home the next day. Perhaps he wakes up every day to the scent of hops! Cheers Tom and thank you for your contribution to brewing in London.
