EBCU Beer Styles Guide

The European Beer Consumers Union (EBCU), of which CAMRA is a leading member, has produced a new guide called Beer Styles of Europe and Beyond. It is the world’s first on-line consumer guide to the diversity of beer today. The guide puts beer styles into six major groups based on their ingredients, brewing process and serving styles plus other relevant characteristics. It is intended to help beer drinkers of all levels of knowledge to identify common themes among beers of the same style and appreciate the craft and diversity of brewing. It is co-ordinated by Tim Webb, the co-author of the World Atlas of Beer, among many other publications. Although it has a European perspective, it aims to be compatible with the 2021 guidelines for the Beer Judge Certification Program and the Beer Styles 2023 Guidelines as produced by the Brewers Association in the United States. Tim explained, “The website offers invaluable insights into the diversity of beer in today’s world, outlining brewing methods, historical backgrounds, and even serving styles that differentiate one beer from another. It is an on-line compendium where the styles listed are those that have stood the test of time or seem well set to do so.” This is intended to be a ‘living’ document and the EBCU will be updating the guide to reflect changes as they occur.
